PhotoAssist was originally created in 2000 by Duncan Soar to help him and his coursemates at the London College of Printing (now the LCC) find assisting work. Since then, Duncan has become a photographer in his own right (www.duncansoar.com), and the site has grown to become an online resource for assisting photographers and photographers starting out in their careers. To this day, Photoassist continues to grow as the most popular community for assistants in the UK and has seen a number of its members progress to becoming photographers - in fact, we're proud that some ex-members have used the site to find their own assistants. The site relaunched in August 2007 to include a more detailed search facility and to allow assistants to create a far more in-depth profile, particularly to take into account the increased need of photographers for digital assistance.

Based around an interactive database, photoassist.co.uk has four aims

To assist photographers in finding suitable assistants
The core of the site remains the searchable database of assistants throughout the UK, and now including the USA. With highly detailed registration criteria, photographers are able to pinpoint assistants with varying levels of expertise at precisely the place they need them.

To aid assistants in their search for work
There are a disproportionate number of assistants to photographers, so finding work as an assistant is always going to be tough. However, due to the changing nature of work, more and more photographers are using freelance assistants, each of which has individual skills to offer. By listing those skills and allowing photographers to search through them, the database increases the chances of assistants being noticed and finding employment.

To create an online resource for students of photography and anyone considering photography as a career
With the new articles and information section, the site will include articles that will help to explain just what it is that professional photography and assisting involves. Business and other practical skills that are needed to help photographers survive in an increasingly competitive market are not always taught at photography college, so this section of the site aims to help bridge this gap.

To encourage an online community of assistants
The discussions and jobs forums, as well as the testing forums (where photographers, stylists and make-up artists can combine their talents to produce fashion shoots), are all intended to help encourage assistants and students of photography to communicate, swap ideas, and ask any questions related to photography as a career.
