Really you shouldn't have to take the laptop, as if the supplied mac goes down a new one should be sent out on a bike. I just take my own as i know 100% if the sh*t hits the fan my laptop works fine with Leaf Cameras. If you do have to use your own laptop then that should be charged out as extra on top of your day rate.

Regarding the GPS & Google Maps. I've got sat nav on my blackberry but still use the A-Z. Find it quicker and easier. Also i wouldn't recommend walking around some dodgy area of Hackney with your head buried in your phone. Likely to get robbed.

Also handy to have the Rental Company & Courier numbers in your phone.

General assisting discussions/questions : What do I charge for fuel costs?

    Author: Mike Dodd
Subject: What do I charge for fuel costs?
Posted: 06 May 2008 at 6:08pm

Sorry my last post was a bit abrubt! It was a hectic day! Thanks for all your help guys.

As I seem to be getting work that involves quite a lot of travel I decided to get this sorted properly so I'm consistent going forward.
It actually costs me about 10p/mile in fuel costs so I decided to charge 19p/mile as I thought 24p was a pretty steep. I then figured I should have an allowance in my day rate. So my day rate now includes up to 15 or so miles which covers most of central London which I think is fair. I mean if I have to travel 20 or so miles one way I'm not going to charge but if it's more like 50 miles one way then I use the 15 mile allowance rule.

I did discuss it with the photographer first and he was expecting to pay me about 25 in travel for the last job. With my calculations it came to 22 so I think this should work.

A train ticket would be so much simpler to claim back on but then I hate public transport!! =o)

Edited by Mike Dodd - 06 May 2008 at 7:12pm
