i have recently bought a second hand olympus E500 because thats all i could afford to buy before i start my part time course,i just want to know if the olympus E500 is a good camera or if its no use at all

I don't know the camera but I've just looked at its details on the web and I'm sure it will be fine. 8mp is definitely sufficient, and as long as it's got a manual setting then it'll be good for learning on. The only thing I would say is that it doesn't look like you're able to shoot in RAW format on it, which is a drawback when it comes to file processing as you're going to be limited in what you can do by the fact that you'll only have 8bit jpegs to play with. RAW files give you so much more in terms of pulling detail out of shadow and highlight with minimal image degradation for example...
But otherwise it looks like the camera will be great for starting on - maybe for your next one look at something like a 2nd hand nikon D100 or D200 or something. Needless to say, the camera's only half of what you need to produce a great image - the only thing that's vital is a decent lens, and that's often going to cost you more than the camera itself...
