Timothy Casten

London, London

Photo Assistant17+ years exp

My name is Timothy Casten, I am a filmmaker and photographer with a decade's worth of experience in photography and production. In 2012, I graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) majoring in Photo-media. I have since worked in many roles within the creative industry, including that of a director, producer, photographer, production manager, assistant, cinematographer and editor. From March 2013 until May 2017, I ran the Melbourne-based production company Eye Sea Films with my co-producer. Together,?we worked with many clients including Universal Music and Facebook, and created a large body of work ranging from online content to music videos, photo editorials, TV advertisements, short films, documentaries, and video art installations. I was involved in the creative direction of most projects and was in charge of pitching for jobs. I am highly experienced in managing shoot logistics and budgets and was also responsible for sourcing and booking talent, crew, and location. I have worked on a number of complex projects that have involved interstate travel, multiple week shooting schedules and budgets ranging from next to nothing up to ?90k and more. I am often involved with many projects from pre-production through to delivery. I was the main director at the company and co-produced many of our projects before expanding the business and signing several new directors and producers to our permanent roster in 2016. I relocated to London in June 2017 and, while I don't run the company full-time anymore, I continue with certain administrative duties and oversee various projects. In addition, I have been on the directors roster and am currently represented by SO Productions in Melbourne since 2015. Through them I have been able to work with a highly experienced team and directed big budget TVCs and web content. This experience helped me to develop a strong ability to work under pressure towards strict and tight deadlines, as I handled multiple projects across both companies simultaneously. Efficiency and organisation has been important to ensure projects are consistently completed to a high standard. Working as a director and photographer for the last 10 years has given me a strong understanding of shooting both in a studio environment and on location. I can shoot anything from products to models to events and have a lot of experience with various camera, lighting and audio kits. I have a high level of experience shooting stills and video with DSLRs and have a strong understanding of high-end movie cameras from the Arri, RED, Black Magic and Sony range. I am also familiar with file management and the technical aspects of operating, supporting and delivering different audio and video formats, as well as the output of codecs for web and broadcast use. I feel that my experience has given me strong creative, technical and administrative skills that align closely with what is required to work well in the industry. I am confident that I will be able to to function to the best of my abilities and will utilise my skills to help create some new and exciting work

As I walk through the Coventry city centre I notice everyone stares straight ahead, eyes latched onto their path, But my eyes, as if incapable to control them are looking up, taking note of geometric shapes buried in architecture, how the afternoon sun is vibrant and providing. Naturally, my hand reaches for my camera. I realise how photography has altered my perception of the world, given me the tools to interpret my surroundings uniquely, conjuring inspiration from the most insignificant of objects. For me Photography is more than just ?technically perfect rendering?, it's the ability to show emotion and to tell a story through composition and lighting. If I'm honest,I don't understand many photography terms such as Aperture, I solely Rely on my Eyes to take photos and the funny thing about that is I wear Glasses so I guess you could say I have Double Vision. I love to experiment with these two aspects as the minutest of changes can drastically alter ones perception and evoke particular feelings. I often take walks during different times of the day within the same route so that I may appreciate the effects the light has on the textural properties of my immediate environment. Often, the most beauty comes from the people along the way. Capturing the raw emotion of situations that may evolve from something as trivial as a hug, a wave, a kiss. For me, this is why I'm naturally drawn to photography. People. Whether candid or set up in a studio, I feel very connected to people and emotion, so being able to draw the essence of someone's personality and capture it into a single frame is truly a remarkable and inspirational feat. Despite having such a keen interest in photography I did not foresee myself taking a Career into the Photography Industry. I did not Believe I had the skills to Have a Job that involved Photography. It was only when I started to post My photos on social media Platforms such as Instagram and Facebook that I began to look at the comments on my posts of my photos and see Praise from People across the world and Famous Photographers such as Ken Jones who owns a Photography Studio In New York; It essentially gave me the confidence I have now to apply to this Job and the confidence I have in myself and my Skills.I can easily say that it has been difficult, especially having to Find the Confidence and the Bravery I have today by a Psychological Mind Journey,But aren't the hardest of endeavours the most rewarding? By regaining my confidence I have become more independent, controlled, focused and aware of the value of Belief, Patience and Time. Along with all my life experiences I believe I am more than capable of committing myself and my time into this job whilst being able to cope with the many mental, physical and emotional demands it requires. Having had an extremely busy year I have been unable to gain any experience hands on with another photographer, though I am very hopeful to gain this during this year and the next.Though I lack actual experience I am very knowledgeable due to constantly having a book in my hand or glued to a computer reading tutorials and entering competitions to better my technique and understanding. My inspirations are continuously growing the more I read but are mainly drawn from photographers such as John Rankin, David Bailey, Ron Raffaelli,Tyler Gustin and Rui Palha through both personal research and college work. My Interests include reading, playing Football, photo manipulation, films and cinematography amongst others. I am extremely excited about the challenges of this job and hope my ambitions will help pursue greatness in the industry.
